Gabrielle Brady studied documentary directing at La Escuela Internacional de Cine in Cuba. She makes hybrid films, working in creative collaboration with the participants of her films. Island of the Hungry Ghosts (2018), her award-winning debut, screened at more than eighty international film festivals and had a theatrical release in Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It has won more than thirty international awards, including Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival, the Buyens-Chagoll Award at Visions du Réél, the Human Rights Award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, the Grand Jury Prize at the Mumbai Film Festival, and the Best Documentary Film award at the Adelaide Film Festival, and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.
