Rungano Nyoni is a self-taught writer and director. She was born in Lusaka, Zambia, and grew up in Wales. Her debut feature-length film was I Am Not a Witch (2017), which had its premiere at the Festival de Cannes and was nominated for numerous international awards. In 2018, Rungano won the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. She also won the awards for Best Director and Best Debut Director at the British Independent Film Awards in 2017. In 2018, Rungano received the Wellcome Trust Fellowship. On Becoming a Guinea Fowl is her second feature-length film.
On an empty road in the middle of the night, Shula stumbles across the corpse of her uncle. As funeral proceedings begin around them, she and her cousins bring the buried secrets of their middle-class Zambian family to light.
