In addition to works for television that have attracted the attention of the public and critics, Abdeslam Kelai directed four short films for the cinema—Happy Day (2004), A Wonderful Journey, At Your Bedside, and Engagement, before directing Malak (2012), his first feature-length film, which won numerous awards in Morocco and internationally. Goldfishes (2022), his second feature, won several awards at the National Film Festival in Tangier, the Brussels International Film Festival, and received the Feather Award for Best Feature Documentary at the Karama Human Rights Film Festival. Nocturnal sonata, his most recent film, represents a turning point in his cinematographic style.
A solitary young poet finds solace in wandering the city streets at dusk, gazing at the houses and the lives of passersby. One evening, he saves a young woman from suicide. Drawn together by this chance encounter, the two get to know each other and share their life stories with heartfelt sincerity. For the past year, she has been waiting for her lover, who has promised to marry her. Despite this, the poet falls in love with her. However, fate has different plans.
