Director's Biography

Born in Belgium to parents from the Rif region of Morocco, Samira El Mouzghibati pursued film studies at INSAS Brussels, where she specialized in editing and script work. She gradually enriched her experience by participating in various projects, collaborating with directors from different backgrounds on short and feature-length films, both fiction and documentary, in Brussels, Geneva, Marrakech, and Marseille. Convinced of the transformative power of cinema, El Mouzghibati directed her first documentary, (Y)our Mother. She delicately weaves personal and universal narratives while reconnecting with her roots, and strives to delve into intimate subjects through her work, constantly seeking to redefine the boundaries of cinematic storytelling.

In the presence of the film crew

As the youngest of five sisters, director Samira El Mouzghibati is aware she inherited a painful legacy from the past. In response to a tragic incident that was kept quiet, her sisters formed a clan—a tightly knit bond from which their mother was excluded. Thus, when they spoke of her to Samira, they always referred to her as “your mother,” as though she were no longer theirs. For the very first time, we hear what the mother has to say.
