Nikolaj Arcel has written a large number of screenplays, including the adaptation of the first film in the highly acclaimed Millennium trilogy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009). Based on the bestselling book by Stieg Larsson, the film earned Arcel a BAFTA nomination in 2011. His feature film A Royal Affair, which he wrote and directed, won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2012 and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Film in 2013. Since then, Arcel has directed The Dark Tower (2017), and has written a number of critically acclaimed films, making him one of the most sought-after writer-directors in Scandinavia. The Promised Land (2023) had its premiere in the Official Selection of the Venice International International Film Festival.
In 1755, the impoverished Captain Ludvig Kahlen sets out in the name of the King to conquer the harsh, uninhabitable Danish heath, which is ruled by the merciless Frederik de Schinkel. When Kahlen helps the ruler’s maid Ann Barbara and her husband to escape, De Schinkel vows revenge. Risking his life, Kahlen takes up the unequal battle.
