Mohamed Mouftakir first worked as a first assistant director on several Moroccan and foreign films. He has made five short films: L'Ombre de la mort, La Danse du fœtus, Fin de mois, Chant funèbre, and Terminus des anges, most of which won awards. His first feature film, Pégase (Pegasus, 2010), won the Grand Prize at the National Film Festival of Tangiers and the Étalon d'Or at FESPACO. His second feature, L'orchestre des aveugles (2014), won several awards including the prize for Best Director and the Tanit d'Or at the Carthage Film Festival. The Fall of Apple Trees (2020), his third feature, won the Grand Prize at the Tangier National Film Festival, and the Critics' Prize, Cinéclub Prize, and Best Actress award at the Malmö Arab Film Festival.
Slimane, a youngster who has never known his mother, who disappeared when he was one year old. His father disowns him, believing him to be the fruit of an incestuous relationship. Slimane decides to investigate and find out what really happened before he was born. Reality and fiction intertwine to weave the tapestry of a life story.
