Director's Biography

Born in Rome in 1968, Matteo Garrone began his career in the film industry as an assistant cameraperson. In 1996, he won the Best Short Film prize at the Sacher Festival for Silhouette. After setting up his own production company, Archimede, he directed Terra di mezzo (1997), followed by Guests (1998), Roman Summer (2000), The Embalmer (2002), and First Love (2004). In 2008, he won the Grand Prix at the Festival de Cannes for Gomorrah, which also won six European Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Director. Garrone went on to direct Reality (2012), which took the Grand Prix du Jury at Cannes; Tale of Tales (2015); Dogman (2018), which won the European Film Award for Best Film; and Pinocchio (2019). Me Captain (2022), his latest film, had its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.
