After directing several award-winning short films, Portuguese film director Miguel Gomes made his first feature-length film, The Face You Deserve, in 2004. He confirmed his international success with his next four feature films: Our Beloved Month of August (2008), selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at the Festival de Cannes; Tabu (2012), presented at the Berlinale, where it won the Alfred Bauer Award and the FIPRESCI Prize; his Arabian Nights trilogy (2015), presented in the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes; and The Tsugua Diaries (2021; co-director with Maureen Fazendeiro), also presented in the Directors' Fortnight. Grand Tour (2024), his sixth feature, had its world premiere in the Official Competition at Cannes, where it won the Best Director Award.
Rangoon, Burma, 1917. Edward, a civil servant of the British Empire, runs away on the day his fiancée Molly arrives for their wedding. During his travels, however, panic gives way to melancholy.
