Edward Berger began his professional career working on films by Ang Lee and Todd Haynes. His first feature film, Jack (2014), a selection of the Berlin International Film Festival, won the German Film Award for Best Picture and Best Director and Best Picture awards from the German Directors Guild. His series Deutschland 83 (2015) premiered at the Berlinale and was the first German series ever released in the United States. Berger was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his retelling of All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), which he directed and produced. The film won seven BAFTAs and four Oscars, including Best International Feature Film. He is currently preparing the mystery The Ballad of a Small Player, starring Colin Farrell, Tilda Swinton, and Fala Chen.
