Ruben Östlund was born in 1974 and studied at the University of Gothenburg. With his
feature debut, The Guitar Mongoloid (2005), he won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Moscow
International Film Festival. All his subsequent feature-length films had their premieres at the
Festival de Cannes, beginning with Involuntary (2008) in Un Certain Regard. In 2010, he won
the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for the short film Incident by a Bank,
a project whose experimentation with technique and style influenced his next feature, Play
(Directors’ Fortnight, 2011), which won the Nordic Film Prize.
He returned to Un Certain
Regard with Force Majeure (2014), which won the Jury Prize and was shortlisted for the
Academy Awards. The Square (2017) was selected for the Official Competition at Cannes
and won the Palme d’Or, a prize Östlund won a second time with Triangle of Sadness (2022).
