Palestinian filmmaker Kamal Aljafari studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and currently lives in Berlin. He has taught filmmaking at the New School in New York City and the German Film and Television Academy Berlin. He is a fellow at the Institute for Ideas and Imagination of Columbia University. In May 2024, IndieLisboa presented a retrospective of his work. The same year, his short film UNDR was selected for the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and A Fidai Film was presented at Visions du Réel, where it won the Grand Jury Prize in the Burning Lights Competition.
In the summer of 1982, the Israeli army invaded Beirut. During this time, it raided the Palestinian Research Center and looted its entire archive, which contained Palestinian historical documents, including a collection of still and moving images. Taking this as a premise, A Fidai Film explores the visual memory of this looting and appropriates images now in the hands of Israeli archives.
