Ivan Sen made his directorial debut with Beneath Clouds (2002), which screened in the Competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear. Toomelah (2011), Sen’s third film, was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Festival de Cannes. He wrote and directed Mystery Road, starring Aaron Pedersen, Hugo Weaving, Ryan Kwanten, Tasma Walton, and Jack Thompson, in 2013. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, which also saw the premiere of his Goldstone in 2015. In 2019, Sen wrote and directed the science-fiction feature Loveland. His most recent film, Limbo (2023), starring Simon Baker and Rob Collins, had its world premiere in the Competition at the Berlinale.
Travis Hurley, a jaded detective, arrives in the remote outback town of Limbo to investigate the now twenty-year-old cold case murder of Charlotte Hayes, a local Indigenous girl. As the investigation unfolds, a series of truths is revealed, highlighting the complexities of loss and the impact of the justice system on Aboriginal families in Australia.
