Darrell Roodt has directed some of the most acclaimed films to come from his native South Africa for producer Anant Singh, including Place of Weeping (1986), Sarafina! (1992), and Cry, the Beloved Country (1995). He holds the distinction of having directed Yesterday (2004), which received an Academy Award nomination for Best International Film, and subsequently received an Emmy Award nomination in 2006.
Sarafina! burns with raw truth about life in South Africa during apartheid, while affirming the highest values of the human spirit. It is the story of Sarafina, who, like other young students of the time, adopted a campaign of resistance against police presence in schools. She imagines the support of her role model, Nelson Mandela, and finds an ally in her teacher, Mary Masembuko, who supports the students in their cause.
